The Walking Dead Season 4: What If Lilly Had Survived? Audrey Marie Anderson Says…

The Governor (David Morrissey) was poison. Every life he touched was destroyed. Poor Lilly (Audrey Marie Anderson) should’ve stayed in that apartment in The Walking Dead Season 4. Maybe she and her daughter Meghan (Meyrick Murphy) would still be alive and they’d still be with Tara (Alanna Masterson), who is currently alive … but stuck in a Terminus train car.

Audrey Marie Anderson recently talked to myFanbase about her various acting jobs, from Arrow to The Unit, and defended her Walking Dead character’s choice to trust (and fall for) “Brian” so quickly.

“First of all,” Audrey said, “you have to remember that in the beginning, Lilly had no reason not to trust Brian. By the time they were out on the road and in the camp, I think she had no choice but to trust him. She put their lives in his hands and even though she knew he was going to do some very bad things, she wanted to survive. She did everything for survival, not for love.” (That creepy sex while her family was right next to them, though…)

Audrey said Lilly’s reason for shooting The Governor herself was “Retribution.” When Tara was with Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) outside the prison, she mentioned how she saw her sister Lilly swarmed by walkers. We never saw Lilly again. Audrey was asked what storyline she would’ve wanted for her character, if Lilly had survived the prison battle, and she said. “I would have liked to see Lilly become a total badass and find her sister.”

Funny she should say that, because it seems like we might see something like that in Season 5, just not for poor Lilly. Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) is getting more badass, and we’re hoping she and Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) find each other. Both Greene sisters have become strong on their own and with others. And look at how Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) has toughened up since Season 1. Lilly could’ve gone in that direction too, but she didn’t have a chance. Michonne (Danai Gurira) used her katana and not only fought her way out of the prison, she made new pets along the way, but the character of Lilly is more like the rest of us. She wasn’t badass yet and she needed more time to get there.

Do you wish Lilly had been allowed to survive and build that strength, the way other characters have, or are you glad her storyline ended with a bang, so to speak?

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
